As many of you, I’ve been thinking a lot about Valentine’s Day today and wondered what is the true meaning behind this sweet flowered filled holiday. After searching Google, talking to Sarv and eating a pink heart sparkly sugar cookie, I’ve had a revelation! So here how it happened…
First, I found out that Valentine’s Day is celebrated around the world, but many other countries choose to celebrate friendship instead of just lovey dovey stuff. For example, in Finland, Valentine’s Day refers to “Friend Day”.
Then, Sarv called and told me a story about a bunk of Appel Farm campers who one summer were asked, “What makes a good friend?” They all responded with similar answers that basically all meant the same thing:
A good friend is someone who will stick by you even when you are being crazy.
We all have those moments when we become our craziest self. In fact, I’m pretty sure I had one of those days yesterday, and doesn’t it feel great when your best friend still loves you the next day?
Camp is a great place to make these kinds of friends. Your camp friends will know you and your craziness, and love you anyways. SOooooo……
If Love=Friends and Friends=Camp, and Valentine’s Day=Love & Friends, then Valentine’s Day=Camp. So, (here is the revelation)…We should be saying Happy Camp Day instead of that out of date 5th century greeting: Happy Valentine’s Day. I mean seriously, it is the year 2013!
So, on this special day and in this modern era, I would like to dedicate this day to all the camp friendships! Remember your camp friends today, and make sure they know how much you love and appreciate them by sending them a fun “Happy Camp Day!” greeting.
I’ll start by wishing all of our camp friends a very special and loving Happy Camp Day today! Jennie and I are missing you all and can’t wait to see you all this summer!
Much camp love,
