This week, our Camp Team is in Atlantic City attending the American Camp Association’s TriState Camp Conference for an important week dedicated to professional development, personal growth, and building community in our camp industry. Every year, we are lucky to hear two keynote speakers speak on a wide range of topics relevant to our work, but none has come close to being so perfectly meant for us until now.
Sir Ken Robinson, British author, speaker and international advisor on education in the arts, will be opening the week with a presentation on “The Element” – how finding your passion changes everything! We knew Sir Ken Robinson shared our philosophy the very first time we saw this TED talk – take 20 minutes out of your day to watch this incredible presentation – the most watched TED talk of all time!
So, what does it take to achieve personal success and feel like you are in your element? Sir Ken Robinson argues that it is not natural talent that drives personal success, but rather a delicate interplay among talent, passion, attitude and opportunity that brings people to achieve their highest levels of success and lead lives of meaning and purpose. He also believes that creativity should be valued in education as highly as literacy – we can get behind that!
At Appel Farm, we know how finding your passion can change your life. Just as we encouraged campers last summer to “Dream Loud”, our teaching artists and camp staff are always encouraging our children to seek out the things that interest them, move them, and inspire them.
Our Camp Team can’t wait to come home to Appel Farm and bring back the wisdom and advice shared by Sir Ken Robinson today!
