Majors, Minors, and Making the Best Choices

Our dynamic learning program is based on a five-period day with two Majors, two Minors, and a Free Choice period. Your camper’s Majors and Minors will meet for 75 minutes each, Monday through Saturday, in modern air-conditioned facilities, for his or her entire session. Emphasis is placed on the creative process, hands-on learning and collaborative projects as campers work toward performances and exhibitions for their families to enjoy at the end of each session. Free Choice will allow your child to explore other areas of the arts each afternoon, take a dip in the pool, or hang-out with friends.

Majors

Majors, which meet in the morning for 75 minutes each, are offered every summer in our core program areas: Theater Performance, Technical Theater, Music, Dance, Visual Arts, Photography, Video, Creative Writing, Sports & Swim.

All Majors classes culminate with performances and exhibitions. Campers choose their Majors before camp begins and choices are guaranteed, but they still have the option of changing their mind during the first few days of camp.

  • Campers can choose both majors in the same department only if they are different classes. For example, choosing Ballet Major I and Jazz Dance Major II works because they are different dance classes, but a double major in Video does not work because the same class is offered in both majors.
  • Campers in Music majors marked (*) must be able to play at a middle school band level; beginners will be able to study music during minors.
  • 6 and 8-week campers should choose their majors for the first 4 weeks of camp only.

Minors

Minors, which meet in the afternoon for 75 minutes each, are offered in our core program areas and also include new and exciting classes developed specifically for each summer. A list of minors will be e-mailed the day before Check-In Day so you can discuss your camper’s 2 minor choices as a family before you arrive at camp.
Campers should tentatively decide in which departments they might be interested in taking their minors. On Check-In Day, campers and their families will have time to discuss their choices, ask questions from our Department Heads and make their selections. Campers can change their initial Major selections on check-in day and for all of their classes during the first two days of camp, if they have a change of heart.

Read below to learn more about the types of minors offered in each department.

Theater Performance

Theater minors always include classes in acting, musical theater, improvisation, and devised theater. We’ve also offered unique courses in clowning, playwriting, stage combat, directing, Shakespeare, and auditioning. If you are interested in trying out theater, then a minor is a great class to take. If you want to be in a full-scale production, then you should take theater as a double major.

Technical Theater

Technical Theater minors include stage crew and construction, props, costume design, fashion design, and special effects make-up.

Music

Music minor choices are very similar to the majors. Our orchestra, rock bands, vocal ensembles, piano, and recording arts classes are also offered as minors, while additional classes like our jazz funk band, singer-song writer and chamber music groups are also offered. Musicians who are advanced and wish to perform are encouraged to take music as a major. Those at a beginner-intermediate level or who want to learn to play an instrument for the first time should sign up for a minor. Beginner drum, guitar, piano and instrumental classes are always offered.

Dance

Dance minors always include a choreography class, hip-hop dance, and two other forms of dance. Past dance minors have included tap, contemporary and lyrical. All dance majors and minors perform in the showcase at the end of each session.

Visual Arts, Photography, & Video

All of these departments offer minor choices that are more specific in regard to their subject area. For example, instead of general classes in painting, video or photography, minors will offer instruction on specific techniques like oil painting, stop-motion animation, and alternative photography. A class in every art form (painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, Green Corps, photography, video) will be offered as a minor. Majors and minors in all of these departments display their work in the showcase.

Creative Writing

Creative Writing minors always include a general writing class, and our Appel Core Journalism class. Additional offerings have also included poetry, performance poetry, and memoir writing.

Sports & Swim

Team sports, tennis and instructional swim are all offered both minors.
