Guest Artists

Appel Farm campers experience the art forms they are studying at camp, performed by professional artists who inspire them to keep studying! Each session, we book guest artists to teach master classes and perform for the camp community.

Our campers have written stories with the Story Pirates, and asked for “encouragement” from Ivy Baldwin Dance. They have experienced Shakespeare LIVE! by The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, and have danced the night away with The Klezmatics!

They have taken master classes with these talented artists, gained inspiration from their performances, and continued their studies at camp with a renewed energy and appreciation for their art forms!

This summer, the inspiration continues!

We are thrilled to announce our Guest Artists for Camp 2017:

Master Classes with Dave Moser

Portrait Photography Master Classes and Workshops for campers on July 1st-2nd.

Dave Moser is a seeker, an artist, a photographer, a father, a husband, a lover of all things eclectic, a listener, a cook, a marketer, a business person, an outdoorsman and voyeur. He has found portraiture to be the most fascinating aspect of photography due to the connection and understanding it offers, and says “If I understand someone, not necessarily agree with – but understand – I have love for them.” After graduating first in his class with a BFA in photography, he discovered commercial photography and promptly fell in love with problem solving and collaborating with different people in new environments every day. Dave has photographed everyone from CEOs to celebrities to industry leaders to politicians to the every day “regular” person for over twenty years. His work has been featured in publications like: Fast Company, Forbes, People, Success, and The New York Times Magazine, and he is proud to have received numerous national and international awards.

Dave will be working with campers in photography classes on master classes in Portrait Photography. He will also be offering workshop open to all campers!

Second Session Guest Artists

West Philadelphia Orchestra

Performance and Master Class for the Camp Community on July 31st.

With a diverse line-up of professional Philadelphia musicians whose influences range from Sun Ra to Bulgarian brass bands, West Philadelphia Orchestra is a unique live ensemble in today’s auto-tuned musical world. They began playing Romanian ballads, Macedonian folk-dance songs, Bulgarian wedding music, and Klezmer in late 2006, and have continued expanding their repertoire of Eastern European music. The band also plays original tunes which blend other sounds, like jazz and classical, together with traditional Balkan sounds. As much a community as a band, WPO’s performances are celebratory events. With blistering beats and walls of brass, they inspire audiences to hold hands, gyrate, howl, and otherwise slip the yoke of the homogenized culture industry.

Master Class: West Philadelphia Orchestra specializes in traditional Balkan brass music, which makes use of “odd meters” such as 7/8, 9/8, and 11/8. The band will explain how to count and clap these rhythms. Then get ready to join hands to hop, step and kick in circles to the joyous sounds of Balkan brass music!
